Year Up

A representative from Year Up is coming for a campus visit on Thursday, May 3rd from 11:00am – 1:00pm in the Career Center.  This program is a great opportunity for seniors who pursue their post-secondary degree on a part time basis after high school. Students who enter the Year Up program are placed in an internship at one of Year Up's 200+ corporate and government partners and may earn up to $20,000 - $40,000 a year. Students may also earn a weekly stipend and up to 23 college credits.  A representative will be available to meet with students on Thursday, March 3^rd from 11am – 1pm in the Career Center.  Interested students should see the GRAD staff and/or their school counselor to sign up for the presentation.

College Visit

Taylor King, Columbus State University Admission Counselor, will be available to meet with a small group of South Atlanta students on Wednesday, May 2^nd from 11:30 – 12:30 in the Career Center.  Please announce this opportunity to your students who are interested in attending Columbus State.  He is coming to answer last minute questions before they make their final decision.  Students may sign up in the Career Center.

Whiz Kid Named the Lebron James of Chess

A quick glance at Justus Williams and he looks like a typical 12-year-old. He's quiet, loves Jay-Z and Lil' Wayne, and wears the latest and greatest Air Jordan's. However, don't get fooled. Justus isn't typical at all.

He's an internationally ranked chess master -- the youngest black chess master ever. Justus started playing the game while in an after school program called Chess in the Schools. He's confident, but it's not unwarranted. His chess skills have taken him to Brazil, Canada and Greece.

It's not uncommon to find him challenging and beating opponents four and five times his age.

Justus and his family hope his success in chess will help others experiment outside their comfort zones. They're spreading the word through a campaign called "Dare to be Different." More

The "Dare to be Different" campaign encourages kids to explore paths to success that are unconventional, chess vs. basketball or writing prose vs. hip hop. What's exceptional about you? Are you interested in something that not too many people are pursuing? Tell us about it.
